Malthus Kierin always dreamed of adventuring, of making his mark upon the world of Kalan. After he earns his robe and staff, rewards for passing the tests required to become a wizard, the door to his dreams stands open. However, a nightmare lurks on the other side, a black-hearted wizard who, along with his vile undead minions, systematically assassinates all of Kalan's heroes, and then hunts Malthus. After a narrow and expensive victory that nearly split Malthus's band of companions apart, they control the Stone of Zoral, a powerful artifact that can reverse the tide of darkness sweeping across the land. A decisive battle approaches as the enemy's forces converge on the few remaining outposts of free peoples remaining in Kalan. Can the Merranai of prophecy, wielding the Stone, reclaim lands lost and avert an age of darkness?

This novel concludes the Kalan Chronicles in fine style. Proudly showing off his influences (Lord of the Rings, Dungeons and Dragons chief among them), the author continues to take no prisoners, an approach that has worked well since book one, The End of Heroes. Though working within a well-established tradition, Herbst is not afraid to subvert the conventions and put his own spin on the genre. The highlight of part three comes when the forces of light and darkness meet in a lengthy siege high atop a desert plateau, a sequence that Herbst makes certain not to give short shrift. After all, the reader has been waiting for this final conflict for a good long time. Herbst does not disappoint, giving the reader several very serious chapters detailing this last battle, as well as a very satisfying, surprising outcome. No five-star review would be complete without at least one quibble, so I'll just say that I always found the perpetually sunny disposition of Herbst's thief a little unnerving in light of the enormity of the events surrounding her. But that's just nitpicking. I highly recommend this book as well as the first two, and I eagerly await whatever the author does next.Product details
